Dr. John Wells appointed to head IMD 01/06/2008

Upon his appointment Dr. Wells commented: "I'm delighted and honored. IMD is one of the best business schools in the world. Peter's strong leadership has built IMD into the premiere institution it is today and his shoes will be difficult to fill. With the support of a great Faculty and a very strong Board, I am confident that we can enhance and grow this fine institution into an even greater global presence."

Dr. Wells says he chose to join IMD because of its "superb Faculty, top rated MBA program, focus on executive development, great location, strong ties to the 'Who's Who' of European corporations and global reach."

Dr. Wells considers supporting and growing IMD's world-class Faculty as one of his first priorities: "Nothing is possible without high quality, committed and fulfilled Faculty," he said. "IMD can proudly boast great ratings, but these are a direct result of the work of its dedicated professionals. As senior Faculty retire, we need to be hiring and training the very best of the next generation. Recruiting them, from all corners of the globe, will be critical to maintaining the high performance standards IMD has come to expect and enjoy."

IMD's thought leadership programs and research centers are addressing the core concerns of many global companies: building global organizations, effective execution, leadership, corporate responsibility and sustainability. This requires a lot of work.

"In a way, IMD has one of the most welcome problems in the world - the demand for its services far outstrips supply, and this places a considerable burden on the Faculty. "To relieve the pressure we must make clear choices about what we do and what we do NOT do, whilst hiring more of the world's foremost business researchers and teachers."

As the Faculty expands, IMD will need to make a choice about how and where to serve its global learning partners. IMD has already invested in research centers in India and China, and is doing work in many parts of the world.

He says he will also continue to build on IMD's existing Corporate Learning Network to offer true lifetime learning for corporate and individual partners. According to Dr. Wells, IMD has made great strides over the last 15 years deploying technology to make this a reality.

"All this will contribute to a vision of IMD in 10 years time. I will be working very closely with the Faculty and Board to shape this vision over the next 12-18 months."
